Faux fur drawstring bag for Auntie K

The dogs’ Auntie K’s birthday is here and  tried to figure out what to make.    Was thinking something cute but practical – maybe a small bag to hold a few snacks.  But somehow that plan and what came to be are quite different..

The plan:

Started thinking about a small drawstring to put makeup, toner, makeup remover, etc bottles instead of snacks to take advantage of the waterproof lining.   But then wanted to try a square bottom instead of rectangle and ended up with something much larger.

Materials:

  • Lavender faux fur
  • Waterproof chevron

Zo loves this faux fur.

Cut our 4 pieces of 8.5” by 11.5” and 1 8.5” square  faux fur and interfacing to go with them.

Cut 2 pieces of 8.5” by 11.5” and 1 31” by 8.5” piece of lining.   Thought it would be faster to have 1 long piece of lining instead of 3 separate pieces.  But it didn’t save much time and it threw the seam allowances off a bit so don’t think it was worth it.

Ironed the interfacing to the wrong side of the fur.

For the pocket traced a 6” rectangle an inch down from the top of the interior fabric.    With this fabric which doesn’t fold well and has a plasticy feel would use a larger piece of lining and draw the rectangle 2” from the top.

Sewed the rectangle and cut the center slit.

Flipped the lining to the back side.

Installed the zipper.

Sewed lining, right sides together.

Finished lining.   Forgot to leave a hole for turning so had to rip out a seam.

Sewed the sides to the base.

Marked 1” and 1-3/4” from top where the drawstring will threaded.

Completed exterior.

Sewed the lining to the exterior, right sides facing.

Turned it inside out and sewed the hole in the lining used for turning.

Figuring out how to thread the drawstring was the most difficult part.   Because this is fur, didn’t put in seam that would keep the string at the top of the bag.   This is a larger bag with 4 openings instead of 2 so put the cord stoppers on opposite sides.  Next time maybe grommets?

Added a shoe charm on the zipper.   The stitching of the zipper looks a bit rough up close.

Zo and Co were thinking ‘how the human went from practical snack bag to this impractical behemoth is funny’
