Happy Birthday Bow Tie Clutch

The dogs’ Auntie D had a birthday this past weekend so made a bow tie clutch.

Had been trying to figure out a cute bag to make for her and this seemed like one of those designs that one would like to receive but would never actually buy.  Clutches while cute seem impractical.  Not sure what to do with them; how to carry them; to not have a hand free because you have to continuously hold it seems oddly limiting.

Fortunately this was pretty easy.  This was the plan:

Materials:

  • Denim with little white hearts
  • red canvas
  • woodland creature cotton
  • pink zipper

Made the bow using the canvas.

Sewed the long sides together and turned right side out.

Accordion folded the center.  5 folds seemed a bit much.

So went with 4 folds.

Made a small tube with canvas and slid it to the middle.  Could put the tube more to one side or the other but with a bow that is so much wider than it is high, the center looks better.

Sewed the bow to one outer piece of fabric.

Next time would make the bow fabric longer and wider to cover the bag more.   Instead of adding an inch to the width, add 2.   And add an inch to the height of the outer fabric.

Zo sat beside me and made non-helpful comments like ‘you’re kinda slow at this’ and ‘you sure you don’t have a denim needle somewhere cause with layers of denim, canvas, and interfacing you’re struggling with that titanium universal needle’.

Thought about an internal zip pocket but decided the zipper would add too  much bulk so went with a simple pocket.  Used the same interface as is on the denim.

This is the first bag where the zo zo fiona label was added.

Sewed the rest like a basic zipper pouch.

Added a cupcake charm.

The back.

The interior.

You can put your paw on top.

Or slip your paw under the bow.

Zo seems to like it.

Also made a chocolate raspberry whipped cream trifle to go with the clutch.

It tastes much better than it looks.

Zo got some leftover whipped cream.  (Aka puppiccino)

She was in love.

Auntie D seems to like her bag.
